Preloading Firefox In Ubuntu

If you run Firefox frequently, you'll notice how it's much quicker at opening windows when it's already running. You may also have enough RAM to afford to leave a window open when you're done browsing, but find that it's awkward to always be leaving one of the windows open.

In Windows, there's Firefox Preloader. In Ubuntu, there's ksystraycmd (It's in the package kdebase-bin):

Click System->Preferences->Sessions

Then click Add, and for the name enter something like "Preload Firefox". For the command, put "ksystraycmd --hidden firefox".

Now every time Gnome starts, Firefox will be run and hidden as a tray icon, so you can open and close all the visible windows quickly and without thinking about keeping it running.

You might want to create a menu item that performs the same command though, just in case you accidentally open the iconified window and close it completely.

Extensions I'm waiting on before I start using FF3:
(There are a few others I use that I'd still switch without, but these are the main ones it's hard to do without.)

Bookmark Sync & Sort - mostly for being able to upload bookmarks to my own local ftp and share them across computers. I might actually switch just before this one.

FireFTP - because it's better than a lot of other clients easily available on ubuntu. But if I find an alternative program then this doesn't matter. I use FTP a lot though, so it's important for me to have a comfortable client.

Permit Cookies - my favourite cookie manager because it shows whether you've enabled or disabled cookies in the status bar and lets you change it from there, and all it does is alter the built-in exceptions list. If there's another one just as good I can use that.

Tab Mix Plus - I use this not only for a progress bar showing the loading of tabs, and whether tabs are read or unread, but also lets me automatically make left clicking links across domains open in new tabs and control how tabs overflow in the tab bar. It might be possible to find the same functionality in a couple of separate extensions though.

Of 21 extensions I use currently, 8 are incompatible with Firefox 3 at this moment, 3 of which are probably made obsolete by stuff that's native to 3, and one of which is unimportant because I've never actually used it.

Dreams

I've always been interested in dreams so I thought I'd write a bit about what I dream. Obviously I can only go by the ones I remember.

I always feel very safe when actually in dreams, often it feels the same as playing computer games. I'll interact and react to things but either some part of me is still aware that it's not real. Emotions are there but toned down a lot. Often everything is wonderful and beautiful but never overwhelming. And there's a bunch of different types of dream I have.

- - -

Sometimes it seems like I'm experiencing sleep paralysis because I can see my room, and everything is as though I were awake. I'll know that I'm still asleep to some degree, and lately I've automatically tried doing stuff that I've read will help wake me up from that like moving my tongue and trying to wiggle my fingers and toes, and I do wake up from that. Only then will I feel my heart racing, which is odd because when I was asleep I was totally unaware of that, but at the same time I was trying very hard to wake up.

I think this type of dream is mainly caused by a sound disturbing me, like somebody getting up or going to bed in the middle of the night and making too much noise.

- - -

Sometimes I dream that there's an amazing astronomical event going on, like an eclipse only way rarer and way more colourful either at night or in the daylit sky. Every time it happens I grab my camera and take photos, and as I wake up I want to get the photos on my computer to show people, but then I realize it wasn't real. In reality I do sometimes take photos of sunsets or clouds that look pretty nice.

- - -

In 2001 I dreamed I was in QuakeWorld TeamFortress, and in it's own way it is probably the most badass dream I remember. I was at a side entrance to blue base in a very dark level, like well only closer together like 2fort, and dark like one of the huge dark levels that rarely get played. There were grenades being tossed back and forth, explosions going on all around.

I ran across the gap quickly, and got into the enemy base undetected through a side entrance. I was in a rectangular stairwell and the coast was clear, but maybe not for long. I ran as fast as I could up the flights of stairs, feeling the cool air rushing through my hair as I ran, until I reached an attic like area. This huge dark hangar-like place had smaller rooms inside, so I ran into one looking for the flag.

Then there's somebody in the hall while I'm in the side room. The lights are off, and I'm creeping around peering out in the darkness trying not to make a sound. I see two glowing red eyes out in the darkness looking right at me making eye contact - I'm looking right back.

Then I woke up, completely unafraid. Like I was out on a limb but feeling calm and collected.

- - -

I went through a phase of having lots of dreams where I was on the run, chased by some kind of bad guys. Often I might get annoyed at the badguys and forcefully rearrange the dream, maybe turning on godmode or something like I was just ignoring their threat.

My favourite of these had none of that though - in fact there was little contact with badguys. I started out on a slightly raised road in the middle of nowhere, and I was going to be executed for desertion or something because there was some kind of war I was expected to take part in. I didn't feel that particularly intensely though, I just got on with making a getaway.

The land all around was fairly flat and I ran off through some short grass. It became almost like a beach, sparse grass and rippled sand/soil. Then I got back onto proper land again, running. The scenery was brilliant, and there was noone else around.

At some point I was in a big jungle and wading through small rivers, finding the one path through to a kind of stone gateway that was almost like an alice-in-wonderland rabbit hole. I don't know where I was going, I just wanted to cover enough ground that the people who wanted me wouldnt catch me.

After that I was in desert, hiding behind rocks from some other people. Not the ones who were chasing me but they might have been the same side. It was like the place with sand people from Star Wars except there were also gothic ruins like in Guild Wars.

Then I woke up.

- - -

More recently I've dreamed I was in a city, often with a friend or somebody to accompany me, driving around on a scooter or on foot. It's often foggy - like computer game fog, and the city has tall impressive buildings. One time I dreamed of this massive blue crane, and there were walkways up above that made ninety degree turns without any supports. Another time there were shopping malls, always wondering around these massive places never able to find the way back or the place I'm looking for, but it's still good. Sometimes I'm there for a job interview, or there's always some kind of reason to be there - a day trip or whatever. It's never home either, its a place travelled to. And always very bright and cheerful looking.

- - -

I have other dreams, but I won't post those :)

I feel like posting, but I probably don't have anything non-inane to say.

There was some article on gamasutra that got slashdotted, and it was about world of warcraft and the values it teaches people, or what people learn from playing it. The article appeared to be by a 'twitch' gamer - the references to fighting games and skill orientedness reminds me of everything I read on planetquake and the expert quake site. It's just so frustrating to hear from yet another skill gamer trapped in their one-paradigm bubble. They don't seem to be aware that there are skills other than the ones that they learn really easily.
When they complain that a game completely marginalises their abilities, I'm actually pleased that they finally experience what I'd been annoyed about for so long with fps games. It's not really about retribution or anything, just understanding. Not like all twitch games have suddenly disapppeared. Anyway, for me GuildWars has the best gameplay. I should get into it more but it requires quite a lot of time in one stretch, which isnt really how I play games.

It started with my Grandad's modified and extended 48k ZX Spectrum, and now I make a lot of use of computers. The 48k spectrum actually had commercial case mods available for it.

various styles of music:
Well yeah, this is a drifting interest. It's not so much the style itself, but what it includes into music overall. I am in no way shape or form an orthodox musician, I just see what I can do with different things.

films:
In general, I like well told stories. Fight Club, City of God, Pulp Fiction, The Machinist. I'm not so keen on 'concept films' or anything that places too much focus on making a point. Currently they're mostly all computer games.

jazz:
Jazz is like ascii art. Proper jazz eludes me, but I like various takes on freeform expression.

metal:
Metal is the raging expression which parallels my own frustration. I like the patterns, and the flow. I like hearing patterns so impressive they make me grin and go "fuckin' eh", and I like hearing flowing expressive moving stuff that you actually feel. I don't need to have music playing constantly though. Often I like the sound of my surroundings just fine.

philosophy:
What the hell is philosophy anyway? I used to think I was interested in it. Now I'm just interested in life. I don't want to live with my head in the clouds, I want to see things for how they are. If you daydream all day, all you'll see are dreams.
So I emailed the open university to see if I could count A-Level computing towards the first year of a computing degree. They cover the exact same stuff, as computing degrees do not require an A-Level to already have been studied. But apparently, since A-Levels arent the same level as a degree, that is not possible. God damn hippy druggie academics with their "OH RAD, when you think about it really hard, a-levels and degrees are like, totally different levels man! Its like another whole other level, like how a rainbow pony could lie with a pig but it like couldn't with a regular pony because it would like remind them of their ancestry and like their own mortality and stuff. And they can cross the barrier membrane between the fairy world and ours to manifest themselves as regular ponies but if you like open your mind you can tell which are rainbow ponies and which are just like regular. like this one is ... regular. But that one is a rainbow pony, you can just feel it. Like how if someone is like sad you can feel their sadness and stuff. Cause like only a few people in a hundred or a million are telepathic like that, so you're lucky if you can but I can I just like feel it. But you really need to like clear your mind and stuff, like the tibetans or the native americans, but like, in western society we don't make room for that because we're like corportate driven, so thats why we need ketamine and fairy dust." GOD DAMN HIPPIE COMMIES WANT TO WASTE A YEAR OF MY LIFE YOU GOD DAMN WASTER BUNCH OF FUCKING BENCHIES! GET A PROPER JOB INSTEAD OF TELLING ME WHAT I CAN AND CAN'T LEARN.
Battlefield Mwuahaha (Yet another gaming rant)

Ok, sometimes I scare myself.

I was playing BF1942 mod Desert Combat the other day. No wait, let me tell you about Battlefield NineteenFighteyTwo : Durden Combat.

The object of the mod is that you start on foot, and get repeatedly shot by tanks, snipers, bombers and helicopters in or near your base, until by chance you survive long enough to get into a vehicle of some kind, master its controls, and get to the enemy base and start shooting people. When you die, there is a delay before you respawn. This makes people spawn in waves, kind of like reinforcements. It was a nice effect in singleplayer, but in multiplayer it means that less skilled players get wasted shortly after spawning and have to wait to spawn again.

Oh, but dont f*cking talk to me about skills. *Insert blasphemies here* don't *more blasphemy and cursing* talk to me about *mainly cursing* skills. Back in the days when I used to play quake, I'd get fairly pissed off because the game relied too much on a particular subset of skills typically used in FPS games. They needn't be typically used but the way mainstream games are designed they all end up using the same sort of skills. The sort of skills I BITTERLY HATE WITH A GEEHAWWD DAMN MOTHERF*CKING VENGEANCE. So I typically play more simulation type games, in the hope that a deeper simulation will have fewer odd quirks for players to exploit. Now I know this didn't work out with Delta Force 2, which you can read about in my archives, but I thought bf1942 would be different. I thought that once you force people into realistic combat situations that it would be an equal playing field between me and other gamers. This was not the case because of the vehicles. Ohhh the vehicles! They are basically just a pain to learn, especially if you're on 56k because none of the servers will ping you high enough to be able to drive them. This means when you finally get broadband, almost everybody who still bothers to play is far better than you at vehicles. And you need vehicles. It's harder to be good at infantry when you're fighting against vehicles.

Then there's the chat lobbies. These are populated by everybody playing the game, plus a bunch of people trying to ask questions and only getting answers from the most pompous, arrogant over inflated egoes it has ever been anybodys misfortune to encounter. These people piss me off so much, they talk down to anybody. My life has been blighted with fuckheads who think that they're so important that they can talk down to people. People with big horns keep quiet. The unfortunate others honk them constantly. SHUT THE FUCK UP! People ask questions in the lobbies because they think that the people there might know what they're talking about. They don't expect to be called noobs by the less technical minded of gamers. Oh sorry for interrupting your intellectual conversation about getting stoned and how your clan owns.

Anyways, back to the main point. When I get pissed off with DC now, I just teamkill. Now I'm not just some mindless loser, I'm an intelligent gamer in search of some fun. So let me tell you about some of my teamkilling exploits:

1. Blowing up as many people as I can with explosives as soon as they spawn.
This is such a buzz. My best score was 6 teammates and myself in one go. The map was kharkov. Our single base was under heavy assault, meaning teammates were spawning in waves. I'd gone out and got killed several times previously, so I started looking for the right moment and the right place. Enemies were heavily bombing part of our base, meaning one spawn was being used heavily. I took this opportunity to drop a fair few explosives, and lie in wait with the plunger. A bunch of people appear and I fire. BLAM! We're all dead. I look at the scoreboard and see my score of -14. It was then that I knew I'd pulled it off pretty much perfectly. Needless to say, I didn't hang around, although I'd've loved to see peoples reactions. Perhaps I can convince a friend to come and watch.

2. Driving over people in the amphibious vehicles.
This was the most fun I'd ever had in battlefield 1942. If I did this a few more times and then got my cd key banned globally, I'd really feel I'd got my money's worth. I was on the gazala map, and I'd been repeatedly killed by stuff like tanks and helis before I could do anything. First thing I did was get in a tank and start shooting stuff. I killed some enemies and got carried away and shot up everything in my base. Then I drove down to the airfield and shot stuff up there. Somehow I ended up in the amphibious vehicle with the rockets on top. So I drove to the airfield, and shot a few people in the hangar, then drove round a bit, and ended up tearing along the runway toward the hangar with my comrades trying to dodge, but it was no use. That was the funniest thing, and the bit that scared me, I was laughing at how their resistance was futile, and how the tables had been turned. Now it was me that was killing people as soon as they spawned. I was laughing and having a great gaming experience, at the expense of others. And I liked it. To all you "good" gamers: Fuck you - I had fun that day.

That is the end of my rant. What's different about this one is that it hasn't ended in frustration. I believe I have found something new in online gaming, something truly rewarding, and will continue to enjoy it until someone makes a game that I enjoy playing properly.

I never seem to be able to feel peaceful enough. Maybe I'm just worried about being overwhelmed by everything and stuff. Religion would come in handy for a sense of peace, but I'm an atheist now. A metaphysical dichotomy didn't cause me to shut down, but it did make me a lot more anxious.

    <lj:music>some guitar chords what i writ</lj:music>

Recently I've feared losing control of myself, and doing something I'd regret. But when I attacked my DF2 CD, I confronted those fears, and expelled them, *(kind of). I realized that I wasn't losing control of myself, but using emotional reasoning instead of my naturally preferred logical, and that I was still in control. And after logical examination, I still believe that it was a good decision - I had only feared it not being so because I had let people convince me that I was somehow emotionally inferior.

But it still frightens me (though much less than before) because I believe that absolutely everybody can be 'broken', everybody can only take so much before they snap, and that I could have been in a much worse off state than I am now.

It still makes me feel angry at how I've been treated, which makes me wonder if I can contain all this anger. Maybe until I can work out what else to do with it, I should express it, so if anybody wishes to form some kind of punky rebellious musical band of some kind in the Sefton area, I'm available.

Another thing that troubles me is being overestimated by people. Sometimes even being agreed with unquestioningly, I start to feel like I'm about to be overwhelmed. I think that's also related to the above - like I still dont fully trust myself, even though I should. Hopefully time will heal all. Or rather time will reveal to me how to do it myself, provided I keep trying, but then i've always found it impossible not to try.

"At my lowest moments, keep the flame alight, the burning red"

You might have
your pet peeves, but other than that, you're
mainly calm. Blending in with your
surroundings, you're the type of person who
everyone likes. Usually it's you who cracks
jokes at social gatherings - after all,
laughter is the best medicine.
